A Step Up from the plain old Four-in-Hand Tie

I started working at a menswear store recently and was completely out-to-sea when it came to a lot of the terminology that they used for different things. When I would see a carousel of ties I’d just think “Oh, those ties come in a lot of different colors”.  Not, “Oh, there are so many different constructions for tiesĀ.” This ignorance on my part was a source of embarrassment on almost a daily basis because the more knowledgable customers ould ask for a ‘four-in-hand’ tie, or a ’7 fold’ tie and I couldn’t tell the difference.

So I did some research after the hundredth time this happened to me and found that the difference is in the folding! Evidently, the 7 fold tie is a step up from the four-in-hand because it is a solid yard of silk folded over itself seven times (diagonally) to create a very luxurious tie that hangs well due to the added heft.  A real work of art.
