It used to be that you would give someone a gift certificate for their favourite store or maybe even for a spa treatment. Over the years these have been replaced by the gift card which can be more secure, easier to use and easier to carry.One of the problems with the old gift certificates was for large amounts. If you did not use the full amount another certificate would have to issued for the remainder. Today gift cards come with magnetic strips. You now only need to swipe the card at the cash register. The correct amount will automatically be taken from the card and a new balance will be updated.
